Springtime Lace Scarf

(Scarf and tank are both made using the same yarn, Elsabeth Lavold Bambool.

The tank pattern is Chic Knits Ribby Tank)

Designed by Carri Hammett, Coldwater Collaborative

Size: 7” x 68”

Gauge: 5 stitches = 1” in stockinette stitch

Yarn: Medium weight yarn, approx 205 yards

The yarn used in the photo is Elsabeth Lavold Bambool (80% merino wool, 20% wool) 92y/84m; 1.75 oz/50 g.  3 balls.

Needles and Notions:

US size 8 (5mm); 2 pairs

Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations and stitches:

K – knit

S1 – pass stitch from left ipfneedle to right needle without knitting or purling it.  Insert needle into stitch as if getting ready to knit.

P - purl

PSSOPass Slipped Stitch Over  Pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch and off the end of the needle.

Sts – stitches; St – stitch

YO – Yarnover  Before starting a new stitch, wrap the yarn over the right needle, creating an extra loop that is subsequently worked on the next row.

* to * - repeat the direction between the asterisks over and over until you reach the specified number of stitches to remain.

Notes:

  • Read all directions before beginning.

  • Two identical halves are made and then joined in the middle with three needle bindoff.

  • Work 3 Needle Bindoff as follows:  With work still on needles, place the two pieces right sides together with two needles held parallel at the top.  Insert a third needle into the first stitch on both needles and and knit these two stitches together resulting in a single stitch on the right needle.  Work two stitches from left needle together a second time resulting in a second stitch on right needle.  Pass the first stitch on the right needle over the second stitch and off the end of the needle.  One stitch has been bound off.  Continue in this manner, knitting the first stitch on both left needles together and passing one stitch over and off the right needle until two stitches remain on the right needle.  Pass one stitch over as before, cut the yarn leaving an 8” tail, pass tail through both remaining stitches to secure.

  • The first and last two stitches of every row are worked in garter stitch to form a border.  You might find it easier to remember if you place a marker between the border stitches and the body of the scarf.

  • Why not make a shawl? This pattern is easily adjustable to other sizes and/or weights of yarn.  To change the width just add or subtract stitches in a multiple of 9 (equals one pattern repeat).  For instance, to make it wider by two pattern repeats, add 18 stitches to 42 stitches and cast on 60 stitches.  The pattern remains the same.

Directions for scarf (make two alike)

Cast on 24 stitches

Begin Pattern:

Row 1 (wrong side): Purl

Row 2: K4, *yo, k2, s1, k1, psso, k2tog, k2, yo, k1* repeat from * to *; until 2 st remain, k2

Row 3: Purl

Row 4: K3, *yo, k2, s1, k1, psso, k2tog, k2, yo, k1* repeat from * to *; until 3 st remain, k3

Repeat rows 1 through 4 until yarn is almost gone (approx 34” or desired length).  End after completing Row 4.  Place stitches on spare size 10 ˝ needle and set aside.  Work second half in same manner as first half and leave on needle.

To join, place the two halves together with right sides facing.  Using additional needle, work three needle bind-off to join scarf halves together (see directions in notes section above).

To finish, weave in ends using yarn needle.  Steam thoroughly to straighten scarf and smooth stitches.
